The Project for Information Access and Connectivity
(PIAC), which was established in 1997 by the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller
Foundation, collaborated with African grantees and program officers of both
foundations on using technology to:
- enhance communications and the
ability to work with colleagues and like-minded organizations in
Africa and overseas
- improve access to information
- improve the dissemination of African
information
During the five years of its existence,
PIAC worked on a number of activitieseverything from technical assistance
to individual grantees to major initiatives and reports. In its last year,
PIAC produced Rowing Upstream. Published in August 2002, Rowing Upstream
captures the experiences of Ford and Rockefeller grantees making innovative
use of technology, assesses African utilization of the Web, and examines
donor support of ICT. An Internet timeline takes you back to the beginning
of email use on the Continent. In the last chapter, some of Africa's pioneers
tell their "Untold Stories.
We created the PIAC Home Page for two reasonsfirst to provide information
about PIAC. Perhaps more important, the PIAC Web site can link you to
the home pages of African organizations receiving funding from either
the Ford or the Rockefeller foundations.
